The first example of a moving image was in the 1830’s, this then led to the creation of film, the only problem with film at the time was that the motion captured was something that the film would be something that anybody could see if they were there themselves, there was no way to show anything else, this was also limited by the fact that films were usually only a few minutes long. The Lumiere Brothers were film makers who went on to create what we now call editing, they themselves believed film had no future, because of the simplicity of it. Until they realised by splitting the film reel and putting different film reels together this could add more shots to the film, even with how short the films was this had a big impact on the beginning of the film industry. The act of editing was done by using a tool called a splicer, threading the cut reel using a machine to paste it onto other pieces of film.
This is a film from 1903 by a man called The Life of an American Fireman, this not only is a great example of cuts in film but also of more advanced techniques that were being used at such an early time, in the industry.
The industry then took off from there, soon after editing came into being more and more films were being made, this lead to the introduction of colour, where it was added sometimes into film after the film had been made, this was done by hand, this could be used to outline specific objects, important parts of the film. This lead to the invention of colour television, all of which has improved over time into now in which film has become one of the biggest industries in the world.
