Motivated editing is the idea that behind every edit that is made there has to be a reason, a motivation to do such an edit. This can all depend on the film, characters and the place. For example in The Shining there is a scene in the bathroom where they break the 180 degree rule the reason they do this is to add a sense of fracture, where the character Jack is losing his mind. Furthermore something much less complex would be say in a film like The Matrix Revolutions in which it uses wide shots to show the vastness and the enormity of what is happening for example at the ending where Neo goes into the Matrix to fight Mr Smith it shows how it has changed through wide shots of the city and the street where they fight, thousands of Smiths line the streets and there is thunder and lightning and it is raining heavily.
